href="http://www.ucg.org.nz/be-strong-and-of-good-courage/">Be Strong and of Good Courage

Be Strong and of Good Courage

There are times in our lives when we experience doubts and fears, discouragement; times when we feel overwhelmed by what is before us. We are not alone with these thoughts and feelings of apprehension. The phrase “Be Strong and of Good Courage” is repeated ten times in the old testament. These words of encouragement were given by God to Moses who in turn passed them on to Joshua. The same words were used by Joshua to encourage the people of Israel when facing the challenges that lay ahead. When passing on the huge task of building the temple to his son Solomon, King David used these same words “Be strong and of good courage.” The reminder in these words to us is that when we commit our lives fully to God we have access to a source of strength and power greater than ourselves.

The process of conversion causes a transformation in our lives and gives us access to this source of help. I leave you with these encouraging words from a father to his son found in <a

Contrary to what many think, it is not just a one-time event. Instead the Scriptures reveal that it is a process. The process begins with God’s calling, followed by the key steps of repentance, baptism and the receiving of the Holy Spirit—finally climaxing with the return of Jesus Christ, when the dead in Christ are resurrected to immortality and given eternal life. That is the ultimate transformation, being changed from a mortal to an immortal being!

Download for Free

Only two kings in Israel and Judah’s history followed God’s command to tear down the pagan high places of sacrifice. What was it that motivated them to carry out God’s order when so many of their predecessors and successors did not? What can we learn from their example in order to tear down our own spiritual high places in our hearts?

If you’re at all familiar with the history of Israel and Judah, then you probably know this about their rulers: Most of them were pretty awful. They were awful to the point that the small handful of good rulers stood out just on principle of not being arrogant, conceited, foolish, blaspheming idol-worshippers.

Many of the good kings spent a large portion of their reign trying to reverse the evil their predecessors had introduced to their kingdom. They introduced sweeping reforms. They smashed idols and slew false priests. They renovated God’s temple and reintroduced true worship to the people.

Of the 39 rulers in Israel and Judah after the time of Solomon, only eight of them (all exclusively from Judah) attempted this. Only eight saw the depravity around them and decided to do anything about it. And in the books of 1 and 2 Kings, only eight kings are described as “doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord.”

Take Down the High Places

But those kings had failures as well. The overwhelming majority of Judah’s eight righteous kings have their histories tarnished by one common shortcoming: They failed to take down the high places ( ). The high places were the Israelites’ way of responding, “Okay, but…what about here too?” God had made a rule, and His people broke it. Worshipping at the high places, whatever the intent, was sin.

We aren’t told why six of the eight righteous kings of Judah left the high places standing. Perhaps they didn’t see them as a serious problem. Maybe they were exhausted from the effort of eradicating the other forms of sin rampant in their country and decided not to bother with the high places.

Whatever their reasons, we can look at the recorded history and learn that stopping short of destroying the high places was not enough in God’s eyes. Their stories are all tarnished with what equates to, “They did what was right before God, except…”

What Are Our High Places?

So what does this mean for us? href="http://www.ucg.org.nz/the-disasters-that-threaten-our-world/">The Disasters That Threaten Our World

For thousands of years people have been fascinated with predictions of the end of the world.

People who read and study the Bible are not the only ones concerned about where our world is headed. The late author Isaac Asimov, in his book The Choice of Catastrophes:

At times people thought they understood when and how our age would end. But failed expectations about the end of the age have brought profound disappointment to scores of sincere religious individuals and groups. They thought they were correctly discerning the time and manner of the fulfillment of prophecy. But all have been wrong, or at least premature.

In spite of centuries of such disappointments, they haven’t put an end to attempts to associate world events and conditions with biblical prophecies concerning the end time. This is especially true in America, where books, television and radio programs focusing on biblical prophecy abound.

If we look into the inspired writings of the Old Testament prophets and Jesus Christ’s apostles, we find many prophecies that refer to the time of the end. Should we take them seriously? Should they mean anything to us? Are world conditions such that the predictions could be fulfilled in our day? Are we near the climax of the prophesied period in which the world is faced with insurmountable problems and globaldistress of holocaust proportions? Are we approaching Armageddon?

Jesus Christ Himself talked of a future time so horrendous that “if that time of troubles were not cut short, no living thing could survive“— everyone alive would die if that time was not cut short (Matthew:24:22, Revised English Bible, emphasis added throughout). Was He speaking of our time?

<a

The discovery appears to validate a Bible passage, she says.

The tenth-century B.C. wall is 230 feet (70 meters) long and about 6 meters (20 feet) tall. It stands along what was then the edge of Jerusalem—between the Temple Mount, still Jerusalem’s paramount landmark, and the ancient City of David, today a modern-day Arab neighborhood called Silwan.

The stone barrier is part of a defensive complex that includes a gatehouse, an adjacent building, and a guard tower, which has been only partially excavated, according to Eilat Mazar, who led the dig for the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Over the years, the structures have been partially demolished—their building materials scavenged for later structures—and what remained was buried under rubble, Mazar said.

The Bible’s First Book of Kings—widely believed to have been written centuries after the time period in question—says Solomon, king of Israel, built a defensive wall in Jerusalem. The new discovery is the first archaeological evidence of this structure, Mazar says.

Mati Milstein in Tel Aviv, Israel

for <a

That group of people collectively is called “the body of Christ” (1 Corinthians:12:27; Ephesians:4:12). It is a spiritually transformed body of believers not limited to a particular locale, organization or denomination.

The Holman Bible Dictionary, in its article “Church,” explains the background of the word church:

“Church is the English translation of the Greek word ekklesia. The use of the Greek term prior to the emergence of the Christian church is important as two streams of meaning flow from the history of its usage into the New Testament understanding of church.

“First, the Greek term which basically means ‘called out’ was commonly used to indicate an assembly of citizens of a Greek city and is so used in Acts:19:32, 39. The citizens who were quite conscious of their privileged status over against slaves and noncitizens were called to the assembly by a herald and dealt … with matters of common concern. When the early Christians understood themselves as constituting a church, no doubt exists that they perceived themselves as called out by God in Jesus Christ for a special purpose and that their status was a privileged one in Jesus Christ (Ephesians:2:19).

The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God

Nevertheless, God’s law far excels alternative moral values of man. As the apostle Paul wrote, “The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God” (1 Corinthians:3:19).

Historically no nations or peoples have wanted to be governed by all of the Ten Commandments, because they go against the grain of human nature. Some can see benefits in keeping several of the commandments, such as not lying to, stealing from or killing one’s fellow man. But, at best, people generally pick and choose among God’s laws or embrace them only superficially.

Even when people keep the letter of those laws, they often miss their spirit and intent, which Jesus Christ defined as love toward God and love toward our fellow man (Matthew:22:37-40).

In rejecting God’s revealed way of life, people unknowingly cut themselves off from blessings and sentence themselves to suffering. As His Word tell us, “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you” (Deuteronomy:30:15-16).

It is sad that most people choose not to accept God’s offer of a way that will lead to an abundant and fulfilled life. There is much more to learn about this vital subject, and we have only scratched the surface here.
